Switching to the wide page layout
The wide page template is the standard ETHZ content page. The content on old Universal content pages can still be edited but we recommend switching the page template to make optimal use of the new design options.
As part of the ongoing design refresh of the ETH websites, the wide content page has now become the standard ETHZ content page. With this change, we are taking a further step from the previous multi-column page (content area with context area) to one column. The following are the reasons:
- We are aligning the display of the desktop version with the displays on smartphones and tablets. With this change, we ensure that the hierarchy/weighting of the content desired by the author is the same on all end devices (from top to bottom).
- We increase user-friendliness by offering users a clear focus on the actual content and standardising the reading guidance.
- The presentation on the wide page template allows more white space, which serves the general readability and accessibility.
- The wide page template allows more flexibility in the design of the components and pages. The different widths of the components (on the desktop view) can be deliberately played with in order to highlight individual contents and thus provide visual variety. Overall, images in particular are given much more space with the changeover.
- The focus on a single wide content page template reduces the effort for future development.
- The template for the start page (homepage) will also be converted to a wide, column-free template in the future. Special components or component designs will then also be available only for the homepage
What does this mean for authors?
- Existing content pages (universal pages with context column) are not affected by the adaptation. Although the template has been deprecated, the pages will be displayed as usual and can still be edited.
- It is recommended that authors gradually change their universal content pages to the ETHZ content page (wide page format). However, this is only possible if all components and context containers have been removed from the context column beforehand. After all have been removed, open the page properties and in the tab "Advanced" click on the "Use wide page layout" button. See also the AEM manual and tips when protected pageswitching to the wide page layoutlock.
- Note: This change cannot be undone. Tips and tricks on how and where to place this content in the content column can be found on the corresponding help pages.
- New pages can only be created with the new wide ETHZ content page template and new design options and components will only be available for the wide template in the future. Below you will find sample pages to help you layout your pages.
